Recently returned mission president Lynn Poulsen and his wife, Ardith, share some of their experiences while serving in Norway. President Poulsen served as a young man in Norway and returned as a mission president in 2006. The Poulsens talk about the missionaries they served with and the culture of Norway.

Facts about the LDS Church in Norway

  • Norway has over 4,000 LDS Members, 1 Stake, and 1 Mission.
  • In 1849, Apostle Erastus Snow was asked to open a mission in Scandinavia.
  • In September 1851, the first official missionary activities in Norway occurred in Risoer by Erastus Snow, Hans F. Petersen and recent convert,Svend Larsen. Risoer was Larsen's hometown.
  • Branches were organized at Risoer on July 16, 1852, and at Fredrikstad on July 25, 1852.
  • The first Church-owned meetinghouse and mission office was built in Oslo by members in 1871.
  • Norway was separated from Denmark to form the Norwegian Mission on April 1, 1920.
  • In 1950, a Norwegian translation of the Book of Mormon was published, and Norwegian translations of the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price followed in 1954 and 1955, respectively.
  • Norway's only stake was created in Oslo on May 22, 1977.
  • In 1988, the Church was registered for the first time with the Norwegian government.
